Level Up Your Conference Game
School may be out, but conference season is in! You know, those glorious gatherings of minds where ideas collide, free coffee flows, and lanyards reign supreme? Whether you're a seasoned innovator or a newbie navigating the networking jungle, these events can be a goldmine of inspiration, connection, and… well, sometimes just really stale pastries.
But fear not! I'm here to arm you with the top five tips to transform your next conference experience from "meh" to "magnificent."
Commercial interlude: Sign up for Globally’s June 6 summit to put these skills into practice!
1. Go In With a Goal (or Two, or Three!)
Imagine showing up to a grocery store without a list. You'd wander aimlessly, maybe grab a questionable amount of cheese puffs, and completely forget the milk. Conferences are the same! Wandering in with no plan is a recipe for overwhelm. Before you even pick out your most professional-but-still-comfortable shoes, decide what you want to achieve.
Goal Examples:
"Connect with three people who are working on X project."
"Learn about the latest trends in Y technology."
"Find a potential collaborator for my crazy idea Z."
Having a goal will give you focus and prevent you from getting sucked into endless small talk about the hotel carpet pattern. (Though, sometimes those patterns are fascinating.)
2. Stalk… I Mean, Research the Speakers
Okay, "stalk" is a bit strong. Let's call it "strategic speaker scouting." Before the conference, take a peek at the speaker list and do a little digging. What are their areas of expertise? What have they published? Are they known for wearing particularly snazzy socks? (Bonus points if you can weave that into your conversation!)
Knowing a bit about the speakers will make it easier to approach them and ask insightful questions. Plus, it shows you're genuinely interested, not just grabbing business cards like they're limited-edition trading cards.
3. Schedule a Breakfast, Happy Hour, or Other Sideshow Extravaganza
Conference days can get packed, and sometimes the best conversations happen outside of the official sessions. This is where the "sideshow" events come in. Reach out to people you want to connect with and suggest a quick breakfast, a casual happy hour, or even a walk to stretch your legs and chat.
These smaller, more intimate settings are perfect for building real relationships. Plus, you get to escape the conference hall and maybe find a hidden gem of a coffee shop. (And who doesn't love a good coffee shop?)
4. Power Down and Tune In
I know, I know. Your phone is your lifeline to the world, your schedule, and that hilarious meme your friend sent. But at a conference? It can be a major distraction. When you're glued to your screen, you miss out on valuable interactions, insightful comments, and the chance to make eye contact with a potential mentor.
So, power down that phone! (Or at least put it on silent and hide it deep in your bag.) Be present. Be engaged. The world will still exist when you turn it back on, I promise.
5. It's Okay to Fidget (Yes, Really!)
Sometimes, conferences can be a bit overwhelming, and sitting still for long periods can be tough. If you find yourself getting restless, it's perfectly okay to fidget. Doodling in your notebook, taking detailed notes, sketchnoting, or even crocheting (if you're skilled like that!) can help you stay focused and engaged. Plus, you’ll be less likely to turn to your phone for a dopamine hit.
It might seem counterintuitive, but having a small, repetitive activity can actually help your brain process information and keep you from zoning out. Just make sure your fidgeting isn't too distracting to others.
Wrapping It Up
Conferences are an amazing opportunity to learn, connect, and grow. By going in with a plan, doing your homework, and being fully present, you can make the most of every event and walk away feeling inspired and energized. Now, go forth and conquer those conferences, you magnificent federal innovators!
